“The bringer of joy” they called him
For with joy he seemed to brim
The envy of the town
A gentleman from sole to crown

Wherever Charles went, in the summer or in the fall
He made you wonder
If the gods had favourites after all
For in him we found no blunder

Born to wealth that could rival kings
And of course by all the ladies, chased
We had come to believe he had everything
To make us wish we were in his place

The thought of the annual feast at his house
To celebrate the anniversary of his birth
Made the dead in their Graves, with Jealousy, rouse
And the grieving, at last, some mirth

As the crowd approached his house by three,
Past the garden of olive trees
The bringer of joy with a necklace of rope,
Had left this world from a lack of Hope.
